As we move through later stages of life, it’s common to notice changes in strength, balance, stamina, and confidence with everyday activities. Tasks such as climbing stairs, getting up from a chair, carrying shopping, or walking on uneven ground can start to feel more challenging.
At Macfarlane Physiotherapy, our Active Living Programme is designed to help you stay active, capable, and independent through structured, physiotherapist-led training.
This programme focuses on building strength, improving balance and agility, and increasing confidence in everyday movement - not just exercise for exercise’s sake, but training that makes real life easier.
Build Strength and Confidence for Everyday Life
Join our structured programme to build muscle, improve balance, and support safe, confident movement
What Is the Active Living Programme?
The Active Living Programme is a 6 or 10-week supervised programme combining:
- Progressive resistance training
- Balance and stability work
- Agility and reflex training
- Targeted mobility and stretching
Every participant begins with a physiotherapy screening and assessment, ensuring the programme is safe, appropriate, and tailored to individual ability and goals.
Who Is This Programme For?
This service is ideal for people who:
- Want to improve strength and balance for everyday tasks
- Feel less steady or confident than they used to
- Want to reduce their risk of falls
- Are noticing general deconditioning or loss of muscle strength
- Want structured, guided exercise in a supportive environment
- Prefer professional supervision rather than a standard gym setting
You do not need to be injured to take part.
How the Programme Works
1. Initial Physiotherapy Screening
You’ll start with a one-to-one assessment with a physiotherapist to review:
- Strength, balance, mobility and coordination
- Medical history and any joint or health considerations
- Functional tasks relevant to your daily life
This allows us to place you in the programme safely and confidently.
2. Structured Training Programme
You’ll then take part in a structured programme led by our experienced team, focusing on:
- Strength: building muscle to support joints and daily movement
- Stability: improving balance and control
- Agility & reflexes: responding confidently to slips, trips, and changes in direction
- Mobility & flexibility: maintaining comfortable movement
Exercises are progressed gradually, with close supervision and clear instruction throughout.
3. Real-World Benefits
The aim isn’t just to “exercise more” - it’s to help you:
- Stand up and sit down more easily
- Walk with greater confidence
- Manage stairs and uneven surfaces
- Carry shopping or household items safely
- Stay active and independent for longer
Why Choose a Physiotherapy-Led Programme?
Unlike generic fitness classes, this programme is:
- Clinically screened and supervised
- Adapted to joint, balance, or medical considerations
- Focused on function, not fitness trends
- Progressed safely at the right pace
Our team are there to guide, encourage, and adjust exercises as needed.
